Every man who aspired to be an 'actor' in the genuine sense of the word in Hindi cinema has gazed upon Dilip Kumar's face and wished to emulate his talent. Harikrishna Bhatia chose Akshay ‘Kumar' as his screen name in 1992 for this reason.
Dilip Kumar produced a pattern for the perfect actor who could pull every possible feeling from the darkest recesses of his soul and portray it without the use of staccato phrases or poetry and did so with a simplicity that belied his genius. The purest form of expression.
Dilip Kumar was born Muhammad Yusuf Khan on December 11, 1922, in the same Peshawar neighborhood as another great actor and rival, Raj Kapoor. The area was known as Qissa Khwani Bazaar or the storytellers' market. Yusuf was a mischievous boy, and his mother, grandmother, and aunts were the only ones who could shelter his weak, sensitive soul from his father's harsh, traditional attitude. His skill was clear even at an early age. However, it was overshadowed by a self-aware neurotic, which later manifested itself in his characters.
Dilip Kumar's book, aptly titled The Substance and the Shadow, sounds almost cinematic in its description of his entry into the world of filmmaking.
After arriving in Bombay, he went on a job hunt with a family friend, Dr Masani, at the Bombay Talkies in Malad. Devika Rani, the studio's boss, saw the young man and asked if he wanted to work as an actor for the magnificent sum of Rs1,250 per month.
Yusuf Khan, ever humble, replied that he had no experience in the field. “If you can take the time to learn about fruits and fruit cultivation, you can certainly take the time to study the trade of filmmaking and acting,” Devika Rani responded.
He engaged himself in every facet of the craft in order to attain all of his goals. Dilip Kumar was the master of all trades at a time when actors were supposed to be all-rounders. He could sing fairly well, but he didn't sing very much due to modesty. He was a true Punjabi with a passion in music.
Actors rely heavily on their timing. A minor blunder could completely detract from the impact of a key statement. As a result, the business shuddered when he released Qila (1998). Dilip Saheb, to his credit, recognized the passage of time. He stepped down from the stage quietly and gracefully to allow other actors to take their place.
There is a swarm of people ready to tell him farewell as he walks out the door today, many of them under the age of 30, many of whom have never seen him on TV and may only know him by his reputation. Dilip Kumar, on the other hand, is unconcerned with such things.
The small business he started has grown into a multibillion-dollar corporation with octopus arms all over the world. Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Irrfan Khan, both powerful performers, now share equal credit with the celebrities.
‘He found it brick, and he left it marble,' it was claimed of Augustus' contribution to Rome. Augustus Dilip Kumar, it's been a pleasure working with you.
